ABOUT

Jasper Gitonga Arucha planted his first coffee tree in 2002. Today he is the proud owner of a 5 hectare plantation located at 1890 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Kenya. His plantation is 500m from the Mount Kenya forest in the Chogoria Meru area. Natural springs allow the plantation to be easily irrigated. Coffee is not only a passion for Jasper, it is also his only source of income. It is also his only source of income, which enables him to pay for his children's university education.

Jasper is a member of MECOP, an association of small Kenyan producers led by David Maguta, which works exclusively with Belco to develop the European market and gain more independence from the Kenyan coffee industry, which operates on an auction system without traceability.

Jasper is part of the HANDS ON COFFEE project, a BELCO project which aims to reduce water use by developing the natural process, improve quality and consequently increase producers' income.

JASPER ARUCHA

Jasper's farm is located at an altitude of 2032 metres in the Meru region, near the village of Chogoria. This area borders the Tharaka Nithi region in central Kenya.
Jasper grows Bastian and Ruiru varieties on his 5 hectare farm. He is a member of MECOP.

MECOP is an association of small-scale Kenyan farmers led by David Maguta. MECOP is working exclusively with Belco to develop the European market and become more independent of the Kenyan chain, which operates on an auction system without traceability. The intention is to develop direct sales but also to increase quality.

MECOP works mainly in 3 producing regions: Nyeri, Embu and Kiambu with a dozen farmers. Each farmer has his own drying station and most of them have been financed by Belco, very high quality metal drying beds, Grain Pro bags, more precise equipment (moisture meter...). The coffees are therefore dried on each farm and then David Maguta takes care of quality control, transport to a private processing company and all the export management to guarantee the traceability of each batch...
